Here at Tiboo we are passionate about the positive impact that converting from traditional paper products to bamboo can have on the environment, and of course we would love everyone who visits our website to purchase one of our subscription packs, but we also want you to consider other alternative bamboo products when you are making those purchasing decisions.

Bamboo is a type of grass, and depending on the variety, can take as little as 5 years to reach maturity. Compare that to the average tree which is used to make pulp for traditional toilet paper or kitchen rolls. Fully grown bamboo is harvested by cutting the stalk right down at the base (not removing the roots) which enables the bamboo to re-grow without the need for re-seeding or re-planting.

Let us have a quick look at some other products, other than toilet rolls and kitchen paper, that can be manufactured from bamboo.

Disposable Cutlery

We have become reliant on plastics to create simple daily items such as disposable plastic forks, knives, and spoons, but bamboo is now used to create environmentally friendly disposable cutlery – it is more durable than you might first think and if you choose to, it can be rinsed and re-used without the need to dispose of it at all!

Towels

Bamboo can also be used to make towels! Because we have become accustomed to bamboo pulp being used to make short-life paper products, we may not be aware that bamboo has been used to make fabrics for centuries and makes beautifully soft, durable, and absorbent towels, which is more environmentally friendly than cotton production.

Flooring

Wooden floors for the home can also be made from bamboo. Hard wearing and beautiful, solid bamboo planks are three times stronger than oak and will stand up to a lifetime of family wear and tear. Their appearance is rich and with many varnish options, they will create a beautiful floor to rival any traditional hardwood floor and without the environmental impact.

Drinking straws

The use and disposal of straws has been in the news a lot in recent months, disposable plastic drinking straws are an environmental disaster in their own right. It is estimated that the USA uses over 500 million straws each day, mostly made from plastic, and destined for landfill. Bamboo can be used to make straws which is far kinder to the environment and they also contain natural anti-bacterial agents, so they are safer to carry around with you to use time and again.

Some other products we have come across here at Tiboo which are made from bamboo include bamboo skateboards, bamboo toothbrushes, bamboo sunglasses, bamboo dog collars, bamboo water bottles and even bamboo computer accessories.

We hope this article has inspired you to look deeper into what products are made from and if there are more environmentally friendly alternatives, such as bamboo, to the everyday products we all buy and use. You could always make a start buy purchasing one of our subscription packs of Bamboo Toilet Rolls or Bamboo Kitchen Rolls.
